It was first published in 1859. The story follows a young nobleman named Ilya Ilyich Oblomov. Ilya is known for being a very sleepy and inactive person. In Russian literature, he is a symbol of the "superfluous man." This means he is a person who has many talents but does nothing with them. He finds it very hard to make big decisions or take action. He often stays in his bed or his room for a long time. In the first 50 pages, he only moves from his bed to a chair. This slow way of living has even become a part of Russian culture.

The story shows how Ilya's life is shaped by his past. In a dream, we see his childhood in a place called Oblomovka. There, his parents protected him from all work and chores. They often took him away from school for small or trivial reasons. Because of this, Ilya never learned how to handle responsibility. His friend Andrey Stoltz is the opposite of Ilya. Stoltz had a German father who taught him to be disciplined and hard-working. Stoltz tries many times to help Ilya get his life in order. He even tries to fix the problems at Ilya's country estate.

Writing this book was a very long journey for Goncharov. He first thought of the idea in the mid-1840s. In 1849, he wrote a short story called "Oblomov's Dream." This story later became Chapter 9 of the novel. Goncharov's work was interrupted by many things. His mother passed away, and he went on a long sea voyage. He traveled on a naval ship called the Pallas. This journey took him to the far east of Russia. He even spent time getting to know Siberia. He finally finished writing the book in the summer of 1857 while staying in Marienbad.

Many different people appear in the story to change Ilya's life. Olga Ilyinsky is a young woman who falls in love with him. She tries to help him change his ways so they can marry. However, Ilya's fear of moving forward is too strong. Olga eventually breaks off their engagement and moves to Paris. Two men named Taranteyev and Ivan Matveyevich act as "friends" to Ilya. Instead of helping him, they swindle him and take his money. This leaves Ilya living in a state of penury, which means being very poor. Eventually, Ilya marries his landlady, Agafia Matvievna. She takes care of him just like his mother did when he was a child.

The book uses a narrator to tell the story to the reader. At first, the narrator is quiet and lets the characters speak. Later, the narrator begins to judge the characters. He might call the fake friends "parasites." This makes the narrator feel like a real person in the story. The novel explores how our childhood affects who we become as adults. Ilya even calls his sleepy way of life "Oblomovitis." He eventually dies in his sleep, which was his greatest wish. After he dies, his friend Stoltz adopts his son, Andrey. This shows how the lives of the characters remain linked even after the story ends.
