It was first published in 1859. The story is about a man named Ilya Ilyich Oblomov. He is a young nobleman from Russia. Ilya has a very sleepy way of living. He rarely leaves his bed or his room. He finds it hard to make big choices. He even finds it hard to do small tasks.

In the book, Ilya's friend named Stoltz tries to help him. Stoltz is a hard worker. He wants Ilya to take control of his life. Ilya also falls in love with a woman named Olga. She tries to help him change, too. But Ilya is too slow to act. He stays in his ways and misses his chance to marry her.

Later, Ilya marries a woman named Agafia. She takes care of him just like his mother did. Ilya spends his life dreaming of his childhood. He even calls his sleepy way of life "Oblomovitis." The book is a big part of Russian culture. It shows how much a person's past can shape them.
