She wrote many different kinds of stories about them. Some books are fun adventures about comets or magicians. Other books are more serious. For example, Moominland Midwinter is about facing hard times. The Moomin stories even became plays, movies, and an opera. People all over the world love these characters.

Creating the Moomins was a long process. The first book was The Moomins and the Great Flood in 1945. It was not a big success at first. However, the next two books became very popular. These were Comet in Moominland in 1946 and Finn Family Moomintroll in 1948. Jansson even drew comic strips about the Moomins for a large newspaper. This helped her become famous in many different countries. She even made Moomin dolls for people to enjoy.

Jansson was also a very talented painter.

She held many solo art shows during her life. She even made large murals for public buildings in Finland. She also drew pictures for famous books like The Hobbit. Between 1960 and 1970, she held five different art exhibitions. She felt that being a painter was just as important as being a writer. She worked on both things throughout her entire career.

Her art often showed her own life and feelings. She wrote books for adults, like The Summer Book. This book was based on her own family. She also drew funny cartoons for a magazine called Garm. In these drawings, she poked fun at powerful leaders like Hitler and Stalin.
