Tove Jansson was a prolific Finland-Swedish author, novelist, and visual artist.

She was a creator of both words and images. Her work spanned children's literature, adult fiction, painting, and political cartooning. Jansson is most recognized for creating the Moomin series. These stories and characters have reached a global audience. They have even been adapted into theatre, cinema, and opera. She maintained a unique balance between her literary and visual careers throughout her life.

Jansson's creative journey began in an artistic household in Helsinki. Her father, Viktor Jansson, was a sculptor. Her mother, Signe Hammarsten-Jansson, was a graphic designer and illustrator. Even her siblings followed this path, becoming a photographer and an author.

Jansson studied art formally from 1930 to 1938. She studied in Helsinki, Stockholm, and Paris. This diverse training helped her develop her skills as a painter and illustrator. She held her first solo art exhibition in 1943.

The Moomin characters are her most famous creation. They are white, round, and smooth creatures with large snouts. They somewhat resemble hippopotamuses.

Interestingly, the Moomin design evolved from a caricature. Jansson once drew an ugly creature to represent the philosopher Immanuel Kant. This "Proto-Moomin" was thin with a long, narrow nose and a devilish tail. Over time, the character became much more pleasant and kind. The name "Moomin" actually came from a story her uncle told her about a "Moomintroll" in a kitchen closet.

The Moomin books changed in tone and style as Jansson wrote them. The early books, like *The Moomins and the Great Flood* (1945), were adventure stories. They featured supernatural events like floods and comets. *Comet in Moominland* (1946) and *Finn Family Moomintroll* (1948) brought her significant fame. Later books, such as *Moominland Midwinter* (1957), became more serious. Jansson described this book as being about "what it is like when things get difficult." By the time she wrote *Moominvalley in November* (1970), the tone was quite sombre. She decided to stop writing Moomin books after this period.

Jansson was also a skilled political cartoonist. She worked for the satirical magazine *Garm* from 1929 to 1953. During the Second World War, she used her drawings to lampoon powerful leaders.

She drew Adolf Hitler as a crying baby in diapers. She also drew Joseph Stalin with an absurdly short sword. These cartoons made these leaders appear as preposterous and comic figures. This work allowed her to comment on the serious political climate of her time through satire.

Beyond children's stories, Jansson wrote acclaimed fiction for adults. Her 1968 novel, *Sculptor's Daughter*, was semi-autobiographical. She also wrote *The Summer Book*, which is her most famous adult work. This novel describes a summer on an island with a young girl and her grandmother. Many characters in her books were based on real people. For example, the grandmother in *The Summer Book* was modeled on her own mother. Her partner, Tuulikki Pietilä, inspired the character Too-Ticky.

Jansson's visual art was just as central to her identity as her writing. She was a dedicated painter who held several solo exhibitions.

Between 1960 and 1970, she held five such exhibitions. She also worked on large-scale commissions for murals in public buildings across Finland. Her illustrations were not limited to her own books; she also illustrated classics like *The Hobbit*. She viewed her roles as an author and a painter as being of equal importance.
