The Moomins are a family of white, round trolls that serve as the central characters in a vast literary world.

Created by the Finnish writer and illustrator Tove Jansson, these characters inhabit a setting known as Moominvalley. Although their large snouts make them resemble hippopotamuses, they are technically trolls. Jansson expressed these characters through novels, short stories, picture books, and a comic strip. The Moomin series has become a global cultural phenomenon, representing themes of family, nature, and diversity.

Jansson used specific linguistic and artistic methods to create the feel of her world. She chose the name "Moomin" because the "m" consonant sound conveys a sensation of softness.

This auditory softness is matched by the physical shapes of the characters. Jansson designed them to be round and soft rather than flabby. The creation of the comic strips also involved a collaborative process over many years. Jansson wrote and drew the strips alone until 1959. She later shared the workload with her brother, Lars Jansson. By 1961, Lars took over the job completely and worked on the strips until 1975.

The characters in Moominvalley are diverse, eccentric, and often oddly shaped. The core family includes Moominpappa, a restless soul who once traveled the world; Moominmamma, a calm mother who keeps the Moominhouse safe; and Moomintroll, the main protagonist.

Other frequent residents include Little My, a mischievous and cynical girl, and Snufkin, a philosophical traveler who plays the harmonica. Sniff is a creature who seeks valuables but often feels fear. The Snork Maiden is a happy, energetic friend who loves jewelry. There are also Snorks, who are like Moomintrolls but change color based on their moods.

The history of the Moomin books began during a period of great global change. Jansson published her first two books, "The Moomins and the Great Flood" (1945) and "Comet in Moominland" (1946), during the war years. These early stories dealt with natural disasters and were influenced by Jansson's own depression and the upheavals of war. While the first two books received only lukewarm receptions, the third book, "Finn Family Moomintroll," changed everything. It was the first Moomin book translated into English and became the series' first international bestseller.

Jansson's personal life and family deeply influenced the development of the series. Critics believe many characters are inspired by real people from her life. For example, Moominpappa and Moominmamma are often seen as portraits of her parents, Viktor Jansson and Signe Hammarsten-Jansson. Her life partner, the graphic artist Tuulikki Pietilä, inspired the character Too-Ticky.

Some scholars even view Moomintroll and Little My as psychological self-portraits of the artist herself. The Moomin family's bohemian lifestyle and tolerance for diversity reflect Jansson's own family values.

The Moomin legacy has expanded far beyond the printed page into various media. The stories have inspired numerous television series, including a well-known Japanese-Dutch collaboration. There have also been Soviet puppet and cutout animations, as well as a Polish-Austrian series.

In the realm of film, the series has seen feature-length productions and even the first Nordic 3-D film, "Moomins and the Comet Chase." Even the music of the series has reached new heights, featuring a title song by the artist Björk.
