They are central to many stories written by Tove Jansson. Jansson was a writer and illustrator from Finland. She shared her stories through novels, short stories, and picture books. She also created a popular comic strip for readers to enjoy. The Moomins are loved because they represent a family that values being together.

Creating the Moomins involved many different artistic steps. Tove Jansson drew and wrote the comic strips herself for a long time. She worked alone until 1959. Later, she shared the work with her brother, Lars Jansson. He eventually took over the job completely in 1961. He continued working on the strips until they finished in 1975. Jansson also used specific sounds to help build her world. She chose the name "Moomin" because the "m" sound feels soft. This softness is also seen in the round shapes she drew.

The history of these stories began many years ago. Jansson published her first two books between 1945 and 1946. These early books, like "The Moomins and the Great Flood," dealt with natural disasters. They were influenced by the difficult times of the war. At first, the books did not sell very well. However, things changed with the third book, "Finn Family Moomintroll." This book was the first to be translated into English. It also became the first international bestseller for the series.
