Frank Owen Gehry was a Canadian and American architect and designer. He is famous for his postmodern designs. Postmodernism is a style that uses unconventional forms and materials. His buildings often look like giant, moving sculptures. Many of his structures feature undulating, or wavy, exteriors. He used innovative materials like titanium and stainless steel to create these shapes.

Gehry's work is considered among the most important in contemporary architecture. He changed how the world views the relationship between art and buildings.

Gehry's design process often involved mixing everyday materials with complex structures. He was inspired by utilitarian items like corrugated steel and chain-link fencing. He also used unpainted plywood in his work. This approach is sometimes called deconstructivist architecture. However, Gehry resisted being put into a single category. He treated buildings as collages of different spaces and materials.

His designs often combine the "theatre" of a building with its "back-stage" functional parts. This makes the architecture feel dynamic and alive.

His career included many different types of projects. He designed large museums, concert halls, and skyscrapers. He also created smaller items like furniture, jewelry, and even liquor bottles.

Gehry's passion for building began in his childhood in Toronto, Ontario. He was born in 1929 to Sadie Thelma and Irving Goldberg. His grandmother, Leah Caplan, encouraged his creativity. She let him build tiny cities from wood scraps.

He also spent time in his grandfather's hardware store. This exposure to raw materials influenced his later architectural choices. In 1947, his family moved to California. He worked as a truck driver while studying at Los Angeles City College. He eventually graduated from the University of Southern California in 1954.

Gehry's journey was not always easy. He studied city planning at Harvard University but felt disheartened there. He disagreed with his professors' views on socially responsible architecture. He also left the program to start a furniture company called Easy Edges. This company specialized in making pieces from cardboard.

In 1957, he designed his first private residence. This was the David Cabin in Idyllwild, California. It featured exposed beams and showed early signs of his unique style.

His international fame grew significantly in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1989, he won the Pritzker Architecture Prize. This is the highest honor in the field of architecture.
