Richard Rogers was a highly influential British-Italian architect. He was a leading figure in high-tech architecture. This style focuses on modern materials and structural clarity. Rogers used industrial elements to create unique buildings. He often made the inner workings of a building visible. This approach changed how people viewed urban spaces.

Rogers's design method often involved exposing the building's mechanics. He used a concept called constructivism in his work. This means showing the structure and services clearly. For example, the Lloyd's building in London puts service pipes on the outside. This leaves the inside space open and flexible. He also explored prefabrication, which uses parts made in factories. This idea was seen in his Zip-Up House design.

His career featured several distinct stages and partnerships. He first worked with a group called Team 4. This group included the architect Norman Foster. Later, he formed a famous partnership with Renzo Piano. Together, they won a competition for the Pompidou Centre in 1971. In 1977, he founded the Richard Rogers Partnership. This firm later became Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. It now operates in London, Shanghai, and Sydney.

Rogers had a complex personal history that shaped him. He was born in Florence, Italy, in 1933. His family moved to England in 1938. They fled Fascist Italy to escape anti-Jewish laws. As a child, Rogers struggled with dyslexia. This condition affects how the brain processes reading. He could not read well until he was 11. This caused him significant depression during his school years. He later earned a master's degree from Yale in 1962.

His professional achievements earned him immense global significance. He won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2007. This is considered the highest honor in architecture. He also received the RIBA Gold Medal and the Stirling Prize. His firm won the Stirling Prize for Terminal 4 at Madrid-Barajas Airport.

The Millennium Dome was another massive project. It was completed in 1999 and cost £43 million. Rogers also served as an advisor to the Mayor of London. He helped shape urban strategies for cities like London and Barcelona.

Some of his iconic works faced public or technical challenges. The Lloyd's building faced high maintenance costs. This was because the external pipes were exposed to the weather. In 2006, he faced a controversy regarding a political group. He hosted a meeting for Architects and Planners for Justice in Palestine. He later renounced his link to the group. This happened after pressure from voters in New York.

Rogers's work connects to the broader study of urbanism. He studied how cities are used and how they can be sustainable. He led the Urban Task Force in 1998. This group looked for ways to improve British cities. He also gave the BBC's Reith Lectures on sustainable cities. His ideas helped people think about the future of urban living. He died in London in 2021 at the age of 88.
