He also helped produce famous game series like Metroid and Kid Icarus. Yokoi believed that games should be fun first. He thought the way people played was more important than having the newest technology. This special way of thinking changed how many people make games today.

Yokoi had a very specific way of working. He called it "lateral thinking with seasoned technology." This means using older, reliable parts in new and clever ways.

He thought using the most expensive, cutting-edge tech could actually get in the way. Instead, he looked for parts that were cheap and easy to make in large amounts. For example, he used parts from digital calculators to make the Game & Watch. This helped him create games that were both fun and affordable for everyone.

His career at Nintendo began in 1965. At first, he worked to fix machines that made hanafuda cards.

In 1966, the president of Nintendo saw a toy Yokoi made for fun. It was an extending arm called the Ultra Hand. The president told him to make it a real product for Christmas. It became a huge success! This led Yokoi to make other toys like the Ultra Machine and the Chiritory vacuum. By 1974, he became one of the company's first video game designers.

Yokoi worked with many famous creators during his time. He supervised the arcade game Donkey Kong in 1981. He helped Shigeru Miyamoto learn how to design games.

Yokoi also helped with the game Mario Bros. He suggested that players should be able to play together. He even suggested giving Mario the ability to jump very high. He later designed the Game Boy, which was a massive success worldwide. However, his Virtual Boy console did not sell well in the market.

After thirty-one years at Nintendo, Yokoi left the company in 1996. He helped start a new company called Koto. There, he worked on the WonderSwan handheld console.
