Hiroshi Yamauchi was a very important leader in the world of games.

He was the third president of Nintendo, a company his family started long ago. His great-grandfather, Fusajiro Yamauchi, founded the business. His grandfather, Sekiryo Kaneda, was the second president. Yamauchi took over the role on April 25, 1949. At that time, Nintendo mostly made hanafuda, which are traditional Japanese playing cards. He worked to change the company into a huge global business. He moved the company away from just cards to making video game consoles and games. This big change made him very wealthy over many years.

Yamauchi used his own instincts to decide which products should be made.

In 1959, he found great success by selling Disney-themed playing cards. These cards were very popular and helped Nintendo lead the card market in Japan. Later, he saw an engineer named Gunpei Yokoi playing with a toy claw. This inspired Nintendo to start making different kinds of toys. They made things like the Love Tester and light guns. Eventually, Yamauchi realized that electronics could be more than just a novelty. He saw that technology was becoming a major part of how people played. He started special groups at Nintendo to focus only on developing new video games.

He helped bring famous game systems to players all over the world.

One of his biggest successes was the Family Computer, or Famicom. It was released in Japan in 1983. Outside of Japan, it was known as the Nintendo Entertainment System. He believed that artists were more important than technicians for making great games. This idea helped many people enjoy playing them. In 1990, the Super Nintendo was released in Japan. It was so popular that people camped outside stores for days. They just wanted to be the first to own one.

Yamauchi's influence reached far beyond just making video games for homes.

In 1991, he helped save a professional baseball team called the Seattle Mariners. A group of owners wanted to move the team to Florida. Yamauchi offered $75 million to help keep the team in Seattle. This was a huge amount of money to help the local area. He also became a very rich man during his career. In 2008, he was the wealthiest person in Japan. His net worth was estimated at $7.8 billion at that time.

Even after he stopped being president, he stayed involved in many things.

He retired as president of Nintendo on May 24, 2002. He was succeeded by Satoru Iwata. Yamauchi spent his later years helping his home city of Kyoto. He gave money to build a center for cancer treatment. He also started a museum for poetry called Shigureden. He loved the game of Go and played it at a high rank. He passed away in September 2013. His life showed how one person can change an entire industry.
