Soichiro Honda was a famous Japanese engineer and businessman. He was born in Kōmyō village on November 17, 1906. As a young boy, he helped his father, Gihei Honda, fix bicycles. His mother, Mika Honda, was a weaver. Honda was fascinated by machines from the very start. He once saw a car in his village and loved the smell of its oil. He even saw a pilot named Art Smith fly an airplane. These moments made him love invention and machinery.

Honda's path to success involved many hard jobs and big changes. He moved to Tokyo at age 15 to find work. In 1922, he began working as a car mechanic in a garage. He stayed there for six years before starting his own repair business in 1928. Later, he started a company called Tōkai Seiki to make piston rings for Toyota. This business faced many troubles during World War II. A bomber attack destroyed one of his plants in 1944. Then, an earthquake in 1945 caused another plant to collapse.

Even after these losses, Honda found a way to keep going. He sold the remains of his company to Toyota for ¥450,000. He used that money to start the Honda Technical Research Institute in 1946. In 1948, he founded the Honda Motor Co., Ltd. At first, the company was just a wooden shack. They made motors for bicycles, like the Type A model. By 1949, they made the Type D, which was a real motorcycle. This was the first in the famous Dream series.

Honda grew his business with the help of a friend named Takeo Fujisawa. Fujisawa joined the company in 1949 to manage the money. Together, they helped the company expand across the world. In 1959, they opened their first motorcycle dealership in the United States. Honda became a billion-dollar company that made the best-selling motorcycles on Earth. His bikes even sold more than famous brands like Triumph and Harley-Davidson. He served as president until he retired in 1973.
