Sakichi Toyoda was a famous inventor from Japan. He is often called the "King of Japanese Inventors." He started many important companies during his life. His work helped change how things are made in Japan. This change is sometimes called the Japanese industrial revolution. His son, Kiichiro Toyoda, later started the large Toyota car company.

Sakichi learned many skills from his father, Ikichi. His father was both a farmer and a carpenter. Sakichi studied hard and loved to read books. He even started a study group for other teens. One trip to a machinery show changed his life. He saw machines powered by steam, oil, and electricity. This inspired him to invent new tools for making cloth.

In 1926, he started the Toyoda Automatic Loom Works. He invented many machines used for weaving cloth. His most famous invention was an automatic power loom. This machine used a special idea called Jidoka. Jidoka is a type of autonomous automation. It means the machine stops itself if a problem happens. This helps keep the quality of the cloth very high.

Sakichi also created a way to solve hard problems. He called this method the 5 Whys. When a mistake happens, you ask "why" five times. This helps you find the real source of the trouble. Then, you can stop the problem from happening again. People still use this idea today to save money. It helps make products better and reduces waste.

Many things today still link back to Sakichi. The Toyota Production System uses his idea of Jidoka. In 1973, Japan named him a Great Inventor. This was part of a list of ten great inventors. A luxury car called the Toyota Century was made in 1967. It was named to celebrate his 100th birthday. His family legacy continues through the cars we see today.
