Eiji Toyoda was a famous Japanese engineer and leader. He helped the Toyota Motor Corporation become a successful global company. He studied mechanical engineering at Tokyo Imperial University from 1933 to 1936. After his studies, he joined his cousin Kiichiro at a plant in Nagoya. In 1938, he helped build a new factory in Koromo. This site was once a red pine forest. Today, that town is called Toyota City. This original location is known as the "mother factory" for Toyota.

Toyoda found new ways to build cars more effectively. In the early 1950s, he visited a large Ford plant in Michigan. He saw that Ford made 8,000 vehicles every single day. At that time, Toyota had only made about 2,500 cars in 13 years. Toyoda wanted to use mass production but with better quality. He worked with Taiichi Ohno to create the Toyota Production System. They used a method called Kanban, which used labels to track parts. They also used Kaizen, which means making small and constant improvements.

Toyoda faced many hard jobs while leading the company. His first attempt to sell cars in the U.S. failed. He tried to sell the Toyota Crown sedan in the 1950s, but it was too weak. He did not succeed until the Toyota Corolla arrived in 1968. As a leader, he fought to include new features in the Corolla. He pushed for a 1.0-liter engine and automatic transmissions. These choices helped the car become a huge success.

He became the longest-serving chief executive in the company's history. Toyoda served as president until 1981. After that, he became the chairman of the company. In 1983, he decided to enter the luxury car market. This led to the creation of the Lexus brand in 1989. He received many honors from different countries for his work. These included the Order of the Rising Sun from Japan. He was also honored by Thailand, Belgium, and Australia.

Toyoda lived a very long and active life. He was born into a family that made textiles. He stayed close to his company roots in Toyota City. Even when he had hip problems, he remained a friendly person. He enjoyed solving sudoku puzzles in his later years. He lived to be 100 years old. Toyoda died of heart failure in September 2013. He died five days after his 100th birthday.
