Fritz Todt was a German engineer and a high-ranking leader in the Nazi Party. He was born in Pforzheim in 1891 to Emil and Elise Todt.

He studied engineering at schools in Munich and Karlsruhe. After his studies, he worked on waterpower stations and civil engineering projects. During World War I, he served as a reconnaissance observer in the air force. He was wounded in combat and received the Iron Cross for his service. He later earned a Doctor of Engineering degree in 1932.

Todt rose to power by helping build large structures for the German government. In 1933, he became the Inspector General for German Roadways. He was given the job of organizing the construction of the autobahns. These were large motorways designed to move military transport more quickly during a war. Hitler gave 5 billion Reichsmarks to fund this massive road project.

Because of his work, he won the German National Prize for Art and Science in 1937.

In 1938, Todt started a large organization called Organisation Todt, or OT. This group worked on many huge building projects across the country. One major project was the West Wall, also known as the Siegfried Line. This defense line included 11,283 bunkers and gun emplacements.

To finish these tasks, the OT used up to 800,000 forced labourers. These people were taken from lands that Germany had occupied. Many of these workers, especially Jewish people, were murdered by SS personnel during this time.

By 1940, Todt held even more power in the German government. He was appointed the Minister of Armaments and War Production. In this role, he managed the entire military economy of the country. He set up committees to oversee things like armored vehicles and munitions.

He also worked to make production more efficient by using simpler designs. He wanted to make sure the military had enough tools for the war.

Todt's career ended suddenly in February 1942. He was traveling from Rastenburg to Berlin-Tempelhof in an aircraft. The plane crashed near Wilhelmsdorf, and Todt died along with four other people.

After his death, Albert Speer took over his important jobs. Speer became the new Minister and the new head of the OT. This transition changed how the German war economy was run for the rest of the war.
