He served as the Chief of the General Staff from 1933 to 1938. This was a very important role in the German military. At first, Beck actually supported the rise of the Nazi party. He even helped officers who were in trouble for joining the party. He believed the Nazis could bring hope to Germany after the war. He thought the military and the party could work together as brothers.

As time passed, Beck began to change his mind. He became worried about the plans made by Adolf Hitler. Beck thought the German army was not ready for a big war. He believed that starting a fight in 1938 was a very bad idea. He wrote many notes to try to stop these plans. He warned that a premature war could lead to a terrible defeat. He felt that Germany needed more time to prepare its strength.

Beck had a long career in the military. He was born on June 29, 1880, in Biebrich. He served as a staff officer during the First World War. Later, he led the group that wrote the German Army Operations Manual. This book was called Truppenführung. A modified version of his work is still used by the German army today. He rose through the ranks to become a Generalleutnant in 1932.

His disagreements with the government eventually led to his retirement. In 1938, he left his high position because of his views on foreign policy. After he retired, he did not stop fighting for his ideas. He became a leader in a group that resisted Nazi rule. Beck worked with a man named Claus von Stauffenberg. Together, they planned a secret mission on July 20, 1944. This plan was meant to remove Hitler from power.

The secret plan did not work as they had hoped. After the plot failed, Beck was arrested by Friedrich Fromm. He attempted to take his own life but did not succeed. Sadly, he was executed by one of Fromm's men shortly after.
