He was the Chief of the General Staff from 1933 to 1938. In the beginning, Beck supported the Nazi party. He thought their rise to power brought hope to Germany. He even spoke for officers who were in the Nazi party.

But Beck soon changed his mind. He grew worried about the leaders' plans. He did not want Germany to start a war too soon. He believed the army was not ready for a long fight. He thought a war in 1938 would be a mistake. Beck wrote many notes to try to stop these wars.

He left his high job in 1938 because of these fights. After he retired, he joined a group to fight the Nazi rule. He worked with Claus von Stauffenberg on a secret plan. This plan was meant to remove Adolf Hitler from power. The plan failed on July 20, 1944. Beck was arrested after the plan failed. He died shortly after.
