As a child in Sonobe, Kyoto, he loved to explore the outdoors. He once found a hidden cave after being afraid to enter it. He also enjoyed wandering without a map to find lakes and woods. These adventures inspired the feeling of discovery in The Legend of Zelda. He wanted players to feel like they were exploring a tiny, secret garden. He even used the feeling of getting lost in his own home to design maze-like dungeons.

His career at Nintendo began in 1977 after he showed his toys to the president.
