Super Mario 64 is a famous video game made by Nintendo. It was released in 1996 for the Nintendo 64 console. This game was very special because it was the first in the series to use 3D gameplay. Instead of moving on a flat screen, players could explore large, open worlds.

Mario can move in many ways, such as running, swimming, and climbing. He can even perform special moves like triple jumps or backflips. This new way of playing made the game feel like an interactive 3D cartoon. Many people think it is one of the greatest video games ever made.

The story begins when Mario visits Princess Peach at her castle. He finds that Bowser has invaded and kidnapped the Princess. Bowser hides Power Stars inside magical paintings found around the castle.

Mario must jump into these paintings to enter different worlds. Each of the fifteen main courses has seven Power Stars to find. There are also many secret stars hidden throughout the game. Collecting these stars helps Mario unlock new areas of the castle. Once he has enough stars, he can reach Bowser and save the Princess.

Making this game was a big job for the Nintendo team. Director Shigeru Miyamoto first thought of a 3D Mario while working on Star Fox in 1993. The team spent one year on design and twenty months on production. They started by building the virtual camera system. This system uses a character named Lakitu to show the path.

The developers also worked hard on Mario's movements. They tested his animations on a simple grid before making the levels. This helped make Mario feel like a living character. Some ideas even came from the workers' real lives.

Many talented people helped bring the game to life. Koji Kondo composed the musical score for the adventure. Yoji Inagaki recorded the many different sound effects. The team included about fifteen to twenty people during development. They used a special toolkit to create the 3D graphics. To help players see where they were going, they added fake shadows under objects. This made it much easier to play in a 3D space. By 2015, the game had sold nearly twelve million copies.

Super Mario 64 changed how people make video games today. It introduced a new way to use a controller's analog stick for 360-degree movement. This style influenced many other famous games like Spyro the Dragon.

It was so popular that a version was made for the Nintendo DS in 2004. Even now, people still play it and make new versions called mods. The game's way of moving through 3D space set a standard for the whole industry. It remains a very important part of gaming history.
