To play games, you use ROM cartridges instead of discs. Nintendo chose cartridges because they have very fast loading times. They also help stop people from making illegal copies of games. However, cartridges were expensive and held less data than discs. This made it harder for some game makers to use the system.

Nintendo started building the N64 in 1993.

They worked with a company called Silicon Graphics to build the technology. This partnership was called "Project Reality." The name "Nintendo 64" was actually suggested by a creator named Shigesato Itoi. The console was first released in Japan on June 23, 1996. Later, it came to North America on September 29, 1996. Finally, it arrived in Europe and Australia on March 1, 1997.

There was also a device in Japan called the 64DD that used magnetic disks.

The N64 was the last major home console to use cartridges until the Nintendo Switch arrived in 2017. Today, you can still play many of these classic games on newer Nintendo systems. It remains a huge part of video game history.
