An Etch A Sketch is a famous mechanical drawing toy.

It has a bright red plastic frame and a gray screen. Two white knobs sit on the front of the toy. These knobs let you control a tiny pen called a stylus. The left knob moves the stylus side to side. The right knob moves the stylus up and down. If you turn both knobs at the same time, you can draw diagonal lines.

This toy is a type of machine called a plotter. It lets you create special images called lineographic art.

Inside the toy, there is a clever way to make lines. The back of the screen is coated with aluminum powder. The stylus scrapes this powder away to leave a dark line. This line looks black because it shows the dark inside of the toy. To erase your drawing, you turn the toy upside down and shake it.

This movement stirs up tiny polystyrene beads. These beads spread the aluminum powder back over the screen. The powder sticks to the screen using tiny electric charges called electrostatic charges.

André Cassagnes invented this toy in France during the late 1950s. He originally called it L'Écran Magique. In 1959, he showed it at a toy fair in Germany. The Ohio Art Company decided to make it in the United States. They renamed it Etch A Sketch for the 1960 Christmas season. It cost only $2.99 when it first arrived in stores. The toy was a huge success and sold 600,000 units that first year.

This toy has a very long and interesting history. In 1998, it joined the National Toy Hall of Fame in New York. It was also named one of the 100 most memorable toys of the 20th century.

The toy appeared in the movie Toy Story in 1995. Later, it appeared again in the sequel Toy Story 2 in 1999. These movie scenes helped the company stay strong and successful. Since it was first made, over 100 million Etch A Sketches have been sold worldwide.

Many different versions of the toy have been made over the years. In 1986, the company released the Etch A Sketch Animator. This version used a dot matrix display and had a small speaker. In 1987, they made the Animator 2000 with a large LCD screen.

There was even a color version released in 1993. Some people even use the toy to make professional art. They make their drawings permanent by removing the plastic backing. Today, the brand is owned by the Spin Master Corporation from Canada.
