Most bags are filled with plastic pellets or sand. These bags usually weigh between 40 and 65 grams. People use them to show off skill or to play with friends. The name "Hacky Sack" comes from a brand made in the 1970s. Today, people use the name for the game itself. It is a fun way to stay active and work on balance.

There are many ways to play with a footbag. In circle kicking, friends stand in a circle to keep the bag up.

The game starts when one player tosses the bag to another. Players try to keep it from hitting the ground. If everyone in the circle touches it, it is called a "hack." If everyone touches it twice, it is a "double-hack."

Another way is freestyle footbag, where players perform tricks. They use spins, jumps, and even "ducks" where the bag passes their neck.

Making the right equipment is important for different players.

For circle kicking, many people like crocheted bags filled with beads. Freestyle players often use a 32-panel bag made of special fabric. These bags are designed to set true from the foot for hard tricks. Net players use a different bag with a harder outer surface. Some players even use novelty bags that glow in the dark. Some bags are even made to be set on fire!

This sport has a long history and many different styles.

It is similar to old games like Japanese kemari or Asian jianzi. The modern Western version was started in 1972 in Oregon. Mike Marshall and John Stalberger created the "Hacky Sack" product. It became very popular in the early 1980s. Now, there are world championships held every year. Players like Jan Weber from the Czech Republic are famous in the freestyle world.

Footbag can be played in many unique ways.

You can play footbag net, which is like volleyball played over a five-foot net. There is also Hacky Attack, played by two teams on a sand field. Some people play Footbag Golf by kicking the bag toward a target. In Northern Italy, people play "Hit the Man" in public places. Whether you are playing in a circle or a competition, it is a great way to move.
