Hula hoop

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A hula hoop is a large, circular toy used for play and dance.

You can twirl it around your waist, your arms, or even your neck. Some people use hoops to roll along the ground like a wheel. It is a fun way to move your body and show skill. People have enjoyed using hoops since at least 500 BC. This means they have been around for thousands of years.

Long ago, hoops were not made of plastic like they are today. People used natural things like willow branches or grapevines to make them. They also used rattan, which is a strong and flexible vine. Stiff grasses were another material used for making hoops. In the Native American Hoop Dance, dancers use these hoops as props. They move the hoops to create shapes of animals and symbols. This helps the dancer tell a special story through their movements.

Modern plastic hoops became a huge craze in the late 1950s.

A company called Wham-O made them very famous in the United States. The name "hula hoop" came from the Hawaiian hula dance. A woman named Joan Anderson saw children in Australia playing with bamboo hoops. She thought the name fit because of the hip movements used. Wham-O began selling plastic versions in 1958. They sold 25 million hoops in only four months!

Many people believe hoops were invented in the 1950s, but that is not true. In 14th-century England, there was even a craze for wooden and metal hoops. The world's oldest toy store, Hamleys, sold them in London in 1760. In 1957, children in Norway even called them "rock-rings." In Australia, a man named Alex Tolmer helped make plastic hoops using polyethylene. This new plastic was strong and did not break easily. His company, Toltoys, sold 400,000 plastic hoops in Australia in 1957 alone.

Today, hooping is much more than just a simple toy.

Some people use "hoopdance" to perform in circuses or at festivals. Modern hoops can have LED lights that glow or even smart technology. Some performers use fire hoops with wicks for amazing shows. Others use heavy hoops that weigh up to 8 pounds for fitness. People also join "hoop jams" to dance and meet others. It is a wonderful way to stay active and be creative.
