People use them to move back and forth for fun or to relax. You might see them at a local playground or in a backyard garden. Some swings are even found inside homes, like the Indian oonjal. There are many different shapes and sizes to fit different people. Some are small for toddlers, while others are large enough for adults to sit on.

Moving a swing requires adding energy to keep it going. If you just sit still, air and friction will eventually slow you down. You can have a friend push you to get a good motion. You can also pump the swing by yourself using your body. While sitting, you lean back with your legs out as you swing forward. Then, you sit upright and tuck your legs as you swing back.

However, historians say this is actually a myth without real proof. By the Song dynasty, performers used swings in acrobatics between boats on the water.

They use a long swing with steel bars to try and rotate in a full circle. There are also porch swings, which are large wooden benches for relaxing outdoors.

Swings connect simple play with the science of how things move. A swing acts like a pendulum that moves around a fixed point. To swing in a full circle, you must go very fast. Most swings use ropes or chains, which make a full loop very hard. This is because the chains must stay tight during the whole circle.
