A trapeze is a short bar hanging from ropes or chains. It is a famous tool used in circus shows. The name comes from its shape. It looks like a four-sided figure called a trapezium.

Artists use it to show great skill. They can perform alone or in groups. Some acts are solo, while others use double or triple bars. People love watching these amazing feats of strength and grace.

There are many ways to perform on a trapeze. In a static act, the bar stays mostly still. The artist moves around the bar to do balances or hangs. This type of act looks like a beautiful dance. A swinging trapeze moves back and forth. The performer builds up speed to do tricks. They might end a trick by hanging with their ankles.

This requires a lot of flexibility and power.

Flying trapeze is a very fast and exciting act. A performer, called a flier, jumps from a high platform. Gravity helps them swing through the air. They use special physics to gain height and speed. The flier often lets go of the bar mid-air. Then, a catcher grabs them. The catcher hangs from another trapeze or a cradle. Most flyers perform over a large safety net.

History tells us about the people who made this art famous. A young French acrobat named Jules Léotard helped develop it. He lived in Toulouse during the mid-19th century. He may have practiced using his father's swimming pool. However, the word trapeze was used even earlier. A book from 1832 by George Roland mentions it. Roland thought a man named Colonel Amoros might have started it. He was not sure about the exact beginning.

Many special types of trapeze exist for different skills. Washington trapeze is a heavy bar used for headstands. It even has a small platform for the head. Dance trapeze uses a single swivel to spin in circles. Double trapeze lets two people work together on one bar. They must balance each other's weight perfectly. Some trapezes even have two layers of bars. This is called a duplex trapeze. It lets acrobats jump from one bar to another.
