The name comes from its shape. It looks like a four-sided figure called a trapezium. People often see these in the circus.

There are many ways to use a trapeze. In a static act, the bar stays mostly still. The artist moves around it with grace. They might hang or do balances. A swinging trapeze moves back and forth. The artist uses the swing to do tricks. They might end by hanging with their ankles.

Flying trapeze is very exciting. A flier jumps from a high platform. They swing through the air. Then, a catcher grabs them. The catcher hangs from another trapeze. Most flyers use a net to stay safe.

Some artists work in groups. Two people can use a double trapeze. They work together to hold each other's weight. You can even see a triple trapeze. This uses many bars for many flyers at once. It takes great strength and skill to perform these acts.
