Most carousels have seats shaped like animals. Many of these are horses on poles. These horses move up and down to look like they are galloping.

Sometimes you can ride in a bench or a car. Happy circus music often plays during the ride.

The word carousel comes from a French word. It means "little battle." Long ago, people held royal contests on real horses. They practiced skills like ring jousting. To save their horses from getting tired, people made machines. These used wooden horses on a spinning wheel.

In the 1800s, carousels became very popular at fairs. A man named Frederick Savage added gears to the poles. This gave the horses their up-and-down motion. In the United States, many people made these rides. Some used fancy jewels and mirrors. Others made very realistic painted horses. Most old horses were carved from wood by hand. Today, many are made from lighter materials like fiberglass.
