A seesaw is a long, narrow board.

It sits on a single pivot point in the middle. When one end goes up, the other end goes down. This tool is a lever. It uses a beam and a fulcrum, which is the pivot point.

Most seesaws are at parks or schools.

Two people sit on each end. They face each other and hold onto handles. They push their feet against the ground to lift their side. Some seesaws look like animals or planes. They also come in bright colors.

Safety is important when you play. A child might hit the ground too fast. Because of this, seesaws often sit on soft sand or wood chips.

People call this toy many names. In some parts of the United States, it is a teeter-totter. In New England, some call it a tilt. The word "seesaw" might come from the French word "ci-ça." This means "this-that." It describes the back-and-forth motion. The word "seesaw" is also an example of reduplication. This is when a word or sound is doubled. It shows a repeated action, like moving up and down.
