A seesaw is a fun tool for playing together.

It is a long and narrow board. This board sits on a single pivot point in the middle. As one end goes up, the other end goes down. This movement is a type of lever. A lever uses a beam and a fulcrum to work.

People love to use them at parks and school playgrounds. They bring joy to many children through shared motion.

Most playground seesaws have a very simple design.

A person sits on each end of the board. They usually face each other while playing. The riders grip handles to stay steady. To make the motion happen, they push their feet against the ground. This action lifts their side high into the air. Some seesaws are made in bright colors to look attractive. Other models are shaped like animals, airplanes, or helicopters.

Safety is a big part of how seesaws are used.

If a child jumps off too fast, the other person might fall. This could cause an injury. Because of this, many seesaws sit above soft surfaces. These surfaces might be sand, wood chips, or foam. In the early 2000s, many seesaws were removed from US playgrounds. People did this because of these safety concerns. However, some people believe the fun is worth the risk.

There are many different names for this toy.

In the western United States, people call it a teeter-totter. This name might come from a dialect word. In New England, some people call it a tilt. The name "seesaw" may come from the French words "ci-ça." This means "this-that" and describes the back-and-forth motion. It might also come from the word for a saw. The word uses reduplication, which means doubling a sound to show repeated action.

Seesaws can do much more than just provide play.

Sometimes they are used to help with mechanical work. In the Gaviotas community in Colombia, a seesaw connects to a water pump. In 2019, a set of seesaws was placed on the US-Mexico border. They were installed between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. This shows how a simple tool can connect to many different things. Whether for work or play, the seesaw remains a very special machine.
