A paper plane is a wonderful toy aircraft that people love to make.

Most are gliders made from a single sheet of paper or paperboard. They often look like a sharp, nose-heavy triangle. You can throw these planes through the air just like a dart. Making them is a mix of art and science. People use them for fun, for school, and to study how things fly.

To make a plane fly well, you must understand four main forces. These are lift, thrust, drag, and weight. By changing how you fold the paper, you can change how the plane moves. Some designs are built to fly a long distance. Others are made to stay in the air for a long time. Some are agile or can perform amazing stunts in the sky. Enthusiasts use different folding techniques to find the perfect balance.

People have been folding paper planes since at least the mid-19th century. One American children's book from 1864 describes how to build them. In 1924, a scientist named Ludwig Prandtl built a model at a large banquet. He even made one out of a paper menu during a dinner! It landed on a French Minister's shirt, which was quite embarrassing. Over the years, designs have improved in speed, style, and lift.

Advanced designers use special tools to make better gliders. In Japan, Professor Yasuaki Ninomiya created the "White Wings" series.

These are not just folded; they use paper templates that are cut and glued together. Some of his models even have propellers that spin using the wind. In South Africa, Professor E.H. Mathews wrote the "Paper Pilot" books. He used computer software called AutoCAD to design his models. His planes can fly the entire length of a rugby pitch!

Paper planes connect simple play with high-level engineering. Some people even make paper helicopters, which are called autogyros. These have wings that spin in a circle as they fall. You can use a bungee cord to launch a paper plane very fast. One model called the U-2 flew over 120 meters using this method. Whether it is a simple fold or a complex model, paper planes show how much fun science can be.
