Most people design them for children to enjoy. However, many toys are made specifically for adults or even pets. Some toys help people learn new things or stay active. You can even use everyday items as toys. A child might build a fort using empty cereal boxes. A toddler might play with a broken TV remote. Some toys are made for collecting and displaying only.

Even expensive things like luxury cars or gaming computers can be considered toys.

Making toys involves many different materials and clever methods. People use wood, clay, paper, and plastic to create them.

Modern toys can even be digital or "smart" toys. Some toys are made by using industrial machines to make many at once. In 1893, a company used hollow casting to make lead soldiers. In 1817, Sir David Brewster invented the kaleidoscope. This toy used mirrors to create colorful patterns.

Later, companies like Carpenter and Westley mass-produced these items for many people in London and Paris.

Many famous toys were invented by clever people or by accident.

Some toys happened by mistake during science work. Richard James was working with springs in 1943 when he saw one flop. This led to the invention of the Slinky. Another scientist accidentally made "nutty putty," which became Silly Putty. Play-Doh was also originally made to clean wallpaper.

Playing with toys is a very important part of growing up.
