Playing with blocks helps a child's body and mind. Using them builds strength in small fingers and hands. It also helps the eyes and hands work together well. Children learn about math by grouping or adding blocks. They can learn about shapes and how they fit. Playing with blocks also teaches about gravity and balance.

This helps them see how small parts make a whole. It is a fun way to learn about science.

People have used blocks for a very long time. In 1594, Hugh Plat wrote about blocks with letters on them. He said children would soon learn their alphabet. Later, John Locke wrote about them in 1693. He said children could learn letters through sport. In 1798, Maria and R.L. Edgeworth wrote about "rational toys." These were meant to teach about physics and space. These old ideas show how much people value blocks.

Many famous people helped make blocks better for learning. Friedrich Fröbel started the first Kindergarten in 1837. He made ten special sets called Froebel Gifts. These were based on building block ideas. In the mid-nineteenth century, Henry Cole wrote stories for children. He even included a box of terracotta blocks. In 2003, the National Toy Hall of Fame in New York honored ABC blocks. They named them a toy of national significance in America.

There are many different ways to play with blocks today. Some blocks do not have any connectors to hold them. You might use wooden unit blocks or Kapla planks. Other toys use notches to stay together, like Lincoln Logs. Some blocks use studs to lock together. Lego is a famous brand of these plastic bricks. Other brands like Tente or Rasti also make them.
