A rubber duck is a famous toy that many people recognize. Most are bright yellow and have a flat base to help them float.

These toys are usually made of rubber or vinyl plastic. They are special because they help children learn during water play. In many places, the yellow duck is a symbol for taking a bath.

People even use them for fun things like charity races. In these races, people sponsor a duck to raise money for good causes. All the ducks are dumped into a river to see which one wins.

How these toys work has changed over a long time. Early rubber ducks were very different from the ones we see today. They were made from hard rubber using a process called vulcanization. Because the rubber was so hard, these ducks could not float at all. Instead of floating in a tub, they were meant to be chew toys.

Later, new ways to shape rubber allowed for the floating toys we love. Now, some ducks can even quack or change color.

The history of the floating duck began in the late 19th century. This was when making rubber became much easier for factories. A very important moment happened in 1949 for the toy. A sculptor named Peter Ganine created a new duck design. He patented his work and made it into a floating toy.

He was very successful and sold over 50 million of his ducks. This helped the rubber duck become a famous part of life.

There are many amazing facts about these little yellow friends. In 2011, Charlotte Lee won a world record for her collection. She owned 5,631 different rubber ducks!

Because they are so special, they joined the Toy Hall of Fame in 2013. Some ducks are even huge, like the ones made by Florentijn Hofman. These giant ducks have traveled to places like Japan, Australia, and Brazil. Even the Queen of England was said to have a duck with a crown!

Rubber ducks show up in many parts of our world. You might see them in a famous song on Sesame Street. They are even used by scientists to study the ocean. In 1992, thousands of toy animals were lost from a ship in a storm. Oceanographers followed the ducks as they floated across the Pacific Ocean.

This helped researchers learn how ocean currents move. From tiny bath toys to giant sculptures, ducks bring people together.
