A water gun is a fun toy designed to shoot jets of water.

People use them for recreational games like water fights. The main goal is to soak another person during play. These toys come in many names, like water pistols or water blasters. They are popular because they bring people together for outdoor fun. Many different shapes and colors make them exciting to use.

There are many ways these toys work. Some use a simple rubber squeeze bulb to push water out. Others use a trigger to run a small pump. This pump pulls water from a reservoir and forces it through a nozzle. Some models use a piston, which is a rod that moves in and out. A piston can pull water in and then push it out. Some even use a small motor to do the pumping work.

History shows that people have used water sprayers for a long time. A painting from 1560 shows a child using a squirt toy. In 1861, General William T. Sherman mentioned a squirt gun in a quote. A man named J.W. Wolff received a patent for a water gun in 1896. Early versions were often made of metal. Today, many laws require them to be made of clear or tinted plastic. This helps people not mistake them for real firearms.

Modern water guns often use air pressure to work.

In an air pressurized reservoir, you pump air into a water tank. This compressed air pushes the water out in a steady stream. The Super Soaker brand made this type of system very famous. Some guns use a separate pressure chamber instead of a full tank. This allows you to refill the water reservoir more easily. Other designs use an elastic bladder, which is a stretchy bag, to hold pressure.

Water guns connect to many different types of science and technology. Some use metal springs to launch water or even small balls. Others use a peristaltic pump with rollers that move along a tube. This moves the water forward in a smooth way. Some high-tech versions even use motorized parts to help the user. Whether they use air, springs, or motors, they all aim to spray water. It is amazing how much engineering goes into a simple toy.
