Most marbles are made of glass, clay, steel, plastic, or agate. People use them to play many different games. Some people even place them in marble runs or races. Others create them as a form of art. Many people collect marbles because they look beautiful. They might enjoy the bright colors or the history of the pieces.

There are many ways to play with these small spheres. In the United Kingdom and the United States, people play ring taw.

Players draw a ring on the ground and put small marbles inside. They use a larger marble called a "taw" to flick the others out. In South Asia, a game called kanche is very popular.

Players try to flick their marble closest to a designated hole. Another game is pili goli, where players flick marbles into holes dug in the ground. Some players use special moves like "elephant stompies" to make their marble hard to hit.

People have enjoyed these games for thousands of years. Archaeologists found small stone balls near Mohenjo-daro from about 2500 BCE.

Ancient Romans also played games with small objects. In the medieval era, marbles arrived in Britain from the Low Countries. The name "marble" comes from a time in Germany when these toys were made from real stone. In 1503, the town of Nuremberg even had rules about where to play. They said games must only be played in a meadow outside of town.

Making marbles has changed a lot over time. In the 1840s, a German glassblower invented marble scissors to help make them.

By the 1870s, companies began making ceramic marbles in large amounts. In the United States, S. C. Dyke made clay marbles in Akron, Ohio, during the 1890s. Later, Martin Frederick Christensen made the first machine-made glass marbles in 1903. Today, Marble King in West Virginia is the only American company that makes toy marbles.

Marbles come in many amazing styles and patterns. Some have a colored center that looks like an eye, called a cat's eye.

There are also "Lutz" marbles from Germany that have glittery copper flakes. Some marbles are very large, like a "grandfather" which is the size of a tennis ball. Modern artists like Josh Simpson even make high-quality glass marbles as art pieces.
