They can show many different people from history. You might find knights, cowboys, or samurai in a collection. They can be simple playthings for children. Some are very detailed models for grown-up collectors. These models are often called model figures to show they are special. People enjoy them because they represent many different eras and themes.

There are many ways to make these small figures. Some are made of metal, like tin or lead. Tin soldiers are often very thin and flat. These are called "flats" and can be moved by changing their limbs.

Other figures are "hollow cast," which means they are metal but empty inside. This makes them lighter and cheaper to make. Some figures are made of "composition," which is a mix of sawdust and glue. Today, many soldiers are made of plastic because it is easy to use. Plastic figures can be very cheap or very high quality.

People have been making miniature soldiers for a very long time.

Ancient Egyptians placed wooden or clay soldiers in tombs. They hoped these figures would help them in the afterlife. In the 1730s, makers in Germany began producing tin soldiers. These were made by pressing metal between two pieces of slate. During the 18th century, toy soldiers became very popular everywhere. This happened because people were inspired by the stories of Frederick the Great. In 1893, a British company named William Britain changed how they were made. They used hollow casting to make soldiers that were lighter than before.

Many famous companies have made toy soldiers through the years.

Louis Marx and Company made many different sets. They made "Warriors of the World" and even figures of the Presidents. In Great Britain, a company called Airfix made famous plastic kits. Timpo Toys used a special system to make colorful figures without paint. Some collectors love the Napoleonic Wars or the American Civil War. One man named Malcolm Forbes had a huge collection of 90,000 figures. Another collector, Anne S. K. Brown, has over 6,000 figures at a university.

Some people use these tiny figures to play interesting games.

In 1913, H. G. Wells wrote a book called "Little Wars." He created rules for playing games with toy soldiers. He thought playing these games might actually help prevent real wars. This idea led to the modern hobby of miniature wargaming. Many collectors today like to paint their own figures. They use special matte paint to make them look very realistic. It is a hobby that connects history with art and play.
