Historical reenactment

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Historical reenactment is a way for people to explore the past. These enthusiasts, called reenactors, dress in clothing from specific eras. They recreate parts of history through many different activities. Some reenactments focus on a single moment from a battle. Others cover a much longer period of time. Most reenactors are amateur hobbyists who love learning. Some are professional historians or even members of the military.

To do this well, reenactors must do a lot of research. They look for details about old equipment and uniforms. They want to know exactly what gear people used. Many people buy their clothes from specialty stores. Some even make their own items by hand. They might recreate ancient warfare or the Middle Ages. They can even reenact more recent times like the World Wars.

People have been recreating history for a very long time. The Romans staged famous battles in large arenas. In the Middle Ages, tournaments often showed themes from Ancient Rome. In 1674, King Charles II of England staged a huge recreation. He built a fortress near Windsor Castle with twelve foot thick walls. He used 500 men to guard it and 700 soldiers to act out a siege. This event lasted five days and even included firing cannons.

In the 1800s, reenactments became very popular and grand. The Eglinton Tournament of 1839 was a massive event in Scotland. It was organized by Archibald Montgomerie, the 13th Earl of Eglinton. This tournament was a medieval joust held on a meadow. It drew about 100,000 spectators to watch thirteen knights on horseback.

Later, in 1913, over 50,000 veterans attended a reunion for the Battle of Gettysburg. They even reenacted parts of the battle, like Pickett's Charge.

Today, reenactment is a diverse and active hobby. In the United States, it grew during the 1960s Civil War centennial. Some people focus on being perfectly authentic to the past. Others use modern items like velcro or modern fabrics. Reenactors sometimes call these people "farbs." This term was used at a Manassas event in 1961. Reenactors can be any age, from young children to the elderly. They keep the stories of the past alive for everyone.
