A rocking horse is a special toy for children. It is shaped like a horse.

Most of these toys move back and forth. This motion is just like a rocking chair. People love them because they are fun to ride. They can be simple or very fancy. Some are even made for kings to own.

There are two main ways these toys work. The first kind is very common. The horse is attached to two curved rails. These rails touch the floor as they rock.

The second kind is built differently. The horse hangs from a strong frame. It uses iron straps to stay in place. In this version, the frame stays still. Only the horse moves on the straps.

These toys have a long history. Before they were toys, people used tilting seats. These seats helped people practice jousting in the Middle Ages.

There were also hobby horses on wheels. We do not see the modern toy before the 17th century. Some old books from the Middle Ages mention carved horses too. By the 1800s, people saw them mostly as toys for kids.

Many people made these horses by hand. Woodcrafters built them in their own shops. Later, in the late 1800s, factories began to make them.

One very special horse holds a world record. Katlinel and Les Hartness made it in California. They finished this hand-carved wooden horse in the year 2000. It is 7 feet 8 inches tall. It also weighs 1,200 pounds.

This giant horse is a marvel to see.

You can find it at festivals or private parties. It is big enough for three adults to ride. It can also hold five children at once. The riders can be any age. One rider was only six weeks old. The oldest rider was 94 years old!
