People value these toys for play and skill. They represent a long tradition of woodworking. They also serve as decorative objects for many families.

There are two primary mechanical designs for these toys. The first design is very common. The horse part sits rigidly attached to two curved rockers. These rockers are in direct contact with the ground. As the rider moves, the rockers glide along the floor.

The second design uses a different mechanism. In this version, the horse hangs from a rigid frame. It is held in place by iron straps. The frame remains completely still during use. Only the horse moves relative to the frame.

These toys have evolved through several distinct stages. Early versions were not always meant for children. During the Middle Ages, people used tilting seats. These seats helped knights practice jousting. There were also wheeled hobby horses used for play. The modern rocking horse appeared after the 17th century. Some medieval manuscripts mention carved rocking horses. These were likely intended as toys. By the 19th century, they were clearly recognized as children's toys.

Production methods for rocking horses changed over time. For a long period, hobby woodcrafters built them. These makers worked by hand in small shops. The quality of these horses varied greatly. Some were relatively crude and simple. Others were finely ornamented and very expensive. Some were even made for kings.

Industrialization changed everything in the late 19th century. Factories began to produce these toys on a larger scale.

Extreme examples of craftsmanship exist in the world today. In 2006, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized a massive horse. Katlinel and Les Hartness from California built it. They completed this hand-carved wooden horse in 2000. It is a giant version of the traditional toy. It stands 7 feet 8 inches tall. It also weighs 1,200 pounds.

This record-breaking horse is used for many special events. You can find it at renaissance faires. It also appears at faerie festivals and private parties. It is large enough for multiple people to ride. It can hold up to three adults at once. It can also hold 4 to 5 children at one time. The riders can span many generations. The youngest rider was only six weeks old. The oldest rider was 94 years old.

Rocking horses connect to several different fields of study. They are part of the study of physical activity. They are also classified as dexterity toys. This is because they require balance and coordination. They are also considered traditional wooden toys. They represent a link between historical training tools and modern play. They show how a tool for knights became a beloved object for children.
