Spinning top

A spinning top is a toy characterized by a squat body and a sharp point at its base. It is designed to rotate on its vertical axis, maintaining an upright position through the gyroscopic effect.

This effect allows the top to balance on its tip while spinning. Once in motion, a top typically undergoes a specific sequence of movements. It may wobble briefly before entering a stable, upright state. Eventually, it loses energy and begins to wobble with increasing amplitude, known as precession. Finally, the top tips over and rolls on its side.

There are several mechanical ways to set a top in motion. Small tops often feature a short stem that can be twirled between the fingers. Larger, fist-sized models are traditionally made of wood with a blunt iron tip. These require a string or rope to be tightly coiled around the body.

The user pulls the string briskly to increase the top's angular speed. Some players even throw the top while pulling the string to add forward momentum. Other methods include using a small whip to accelerate the spin or a built-in metal auger, which is a spiral plunger. Modern versions may even use spinning magnetic fields from a ground plate to maintain motion.

Experts classify spinning tops into six distinct types. These categories include the twirler, the supported top, the peg-top, the whip-top, the buzzer, and the yo-yo.

Some tops are designed with unique physical properties. For example, a rattleback, or celt, is a type of top that can actually reverse its spin direction. Other specialized models include the six-sided Perinola used in Latin America and the spinning dreidel used during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. Modern functional art tops have also emerged as collectibles. These are crafted using advanced metal-working, glass-working, and wood-working techniques.

Archaeologists consider spinning tops to be among the oldest known toys. They have been discovered on every continent except Antarctica. Evidence of their long history is found in many ancient civilizations. For instance, tops dating to 1250 BCE were found in China. A carved wooden top was also recovered from the tomb of Tutankhamun, dating to approximately 2000 BCE.

In ancient Rome, tops were used widely as toys. Beyond simple play, they have historically served roles in gambling and prophecy.

Physics explains the stability of a top through the theory of rotating rigid bodies. The top's large rotational inertia and small contact area allow it to spin for long durations.

To increase the total spinning time, one can increase the moment of inertia or lower the center of gravity. During the stable "sleep" period, less friction results in a longer duration of upright spinning. However, friction and torque eventually force the top into precession. This process is governed by complex equations of rigid body dynamics. The mathematics behind these movements is so deep that it is documented in four-volume monographs.

Spinning tops have inspired various cultural and competitive activities. In Japan, people play with Beigoma, while Malaysia has the Gasing pangkah. The Hmong people use tops called Tuj lub, and the Lattu is a throwing top used in India and Bangladesh. Competitive spinning has even grown into an organized sport. The International Top Spinners Association (ITSA) oversees global competitions. These include the U.S. National Championships and the World Championships. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, contestants participated by submitting videos of their spins online.

Beyond games, tops have significant connections to science and popular culture. Scientists like James Clerk Maxwell used spinning tops to demonstrate visual properties of color. By spinning a top with a circular scale, he could measure the ratios of primary colors. In modern media, the spinning top is a famous symbol in the movie Inception. The rock band The Cure even released an album titled The Top. Even biology uses the term, as the name of the species Cyclosa turbinata comes from the Latin roots for spinning top.
