A fidget spinner, also known as a hand spinner, is a mechanical fidget toy.

It consists of a central ball bearing and two or more weighted lobes. These lobes are arms that extend from the center. When a user spins the device, it rotates around a central axis. Most spinners are constructed from plastic or metal materials. These toys became a massive global trend during the year 2017. People used them for various reasons, including stress relief and managing attention-related conditions.

The mechanism of a fidget spinner relies on fundamental principles of physics. At the core is a ball bearing, which contains small metal balls. These balls roll between an inner race and an outer race. When a user flicks a lobe, the bearing allows rotation with very low friction. This rolling motion minimizes resistance during the spin. The design also places mass away from the center of the device. This increases the moment of inertia, which is a property that helps maintain rotational motion. As it rotates, the spinner behaves like a gyroscope. This means it uses angular momentum to resist changes in its orientation. Eventually, the rotation slows down following a pattern called exponential decay.

Fidget spinners generally feature different physical structures based on their design. Most common models include two-lobed or three-lobed variants. The number of lobes affects how the weight is distributed. Some specialized versions may use different materials like rubber or heavy metals. While the basic function remains the same, the visual design can vary significantly. For example, some patents focus on the functional mechanics of the bearing. Other patents focus specifically on the aesthetic or visual appearance of the lobes. These different types allow for various tactile experiences for the user.

The history of the fidget spinner involves several different inventors and patent filings. In May 2016, Michael Scott McCoskery filed a provisional patent application. His design included a centrally mounted ball bearing and specific lobe features. He developed a metal version called the "Torqbar" around 2014 while working in Seattle. He initially sold the device online to an interested community. In November 2016, David Allen Pavelsky filed a design patent for a three-lobed spinner. His patent focused on the visual look rather than the mechanical function. Some media reports incorrectly named chemical engineer Catherine Hettinger as the inventor. She had filed a patent in May 1993 for a spinning toy. However, her design resembled a "finger frisbee" and lacked the central bearing. Her patent lapsed in 2005 due to a lack of commercial interest.

In 2017, the popularity of these toys reached immense levels.

Retailers like Amazon, 7-Eleven, and Toys "R" Us reported very high sales volumes. Most of the manufacturing for these devices occurred in China. The consumer base was quite diverse across different age groups. Interestingly, 23% of all sales came from the millennial demographic. While they were marketed for ADHD, autism, and anxiety, the scientific evidence was mixed. Proponents claimed therapeutic benefits, but empirical studies did not substantiate these specific claims. The toys were a major part of the 2010s consumer culture.

Despite their popularity, fidget spinners faced significant criticism regarding their use in schools. Educators in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia reported frequent classroom disruptions. Many school districts implemented formal bans to manage student behavior. Some studies suggested that the devices might actually hinder academic performance. Research indicated that users experienced increased attentional lapses and reduced memory performance. These effects were seen even in users who expected the toy to help them focus. Some researchers noted that the limited movement of a spinner did not provide the same benefits as general physical activity. In classroom settings, children using spinners often showed lower attention levels than their peers.

Safety concerns also emerged as the toys became widespread. Regulatory bodies like the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued warnings. One major risk involved the ingestion of small components by young children. There were also dangers associated with button batteries, which can cause internal injuries. In one reported instance, a battery-powered spinner caught fire while it was charging. Because of these risks, authorities recommend adult supervision during play. They also advise that these toys should not be used by children under the age of three. These safety issues highlight the importance of careful regulation for novelty items.
