A fidget spinner is a small toy that spins in your hand.

It is made of a central ball bearing and two or more weighted lobes. These lobes are arms that stick out from the middle. Most spinners are made from plastic or metal. The toy works using basic physics like angular momentum. This helps the spinner stay moving for a long time. It also uses low-friction motion to spin very smoothly.

Inside the toy, the ball bearing makes the spinning possible. This part has small metal balls that roll between two rings. When you flick a lobe, the balls roll to reduce resistance. This allows the toy to rotate around its center axis. The design also puts weight far from the middle. This increases what scientists call the moment of inertia. This helps the spinner keep its motion as it turns. As it spins, it acts like a gyroscope. This means it resists changing its position in space. Eventually, the speed slows down in a pattern called exponential decay.

Many people have worked on designs for spinning toys. In May 2016, Michael Scott McCoskery filed a patent for a toy with a central bearing. He later received a U.S. utility patent in March 2018. Another man named David Allen Pavelsky filed a design patent in 2016. His patent focused on how the three-lobed spinner looked. Some news reports incorrectly said Catherine Hettinger invented the modern spinner. She actually filed a patent in May 1993 for a spinning toy. Her design was like a finger frisbee and did not have a central bearing. Her patent lapsed in 2005 because there was not much interest in it.

Fidget spinners became a huge trend in 2017.

People bought them at stores like Amazon, 7-Eleven, and Toys "R" Us. Many of these toys were made in China. About 23% of the people buying them were millennials. Some people used them for stress relief or to help with ADHD and autism. However, scientific studies did not find that they actually helped with focus. Some research even showed that users had more trouble with memory. These studies found that the toys could act as a distraction during schoolwork.

Because they were so popular, they caused many changes in schools. Teachers in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia reported disruptions. Many school districts had to create formal bans on the toys. There were also some important safety concerns to consider. Small parts could be a choking hazard for young children. Some spinners used button batteries that could be dangerous if swallowed. One battery-powered spinner even caught fire while it was charging. Because of these risks, experts suggest that adults should always supervise children. They also recommend that children under three years old should not use them.
