The Slinky is a famous spring toy that moves in a very special way.

It can travel down a flight of stairs end-over-end. It does this by stretching and re-forming itself using gravity and its own momentum. If you drop a Slinky, it can even appear to levitate for a short time. This happens because the top part drops while the bottom stays still for about 0.3 seconds. These fun movements have made the toy a huge success in the United States. It has also inspired many other toys all around the world.

Making a Slinky involves careful science and physics. To walk down stairs, the Slinky transfers energy along its length in a wave. This wave allows the whole spring to descend one step at a time. The way it moves is governed by gravity and a rule called Hooke's law.

Some Slinkys are made of high-grade blue-black Swedish steel. Other versions are made of bright plastic in rainbow colors. Donald James Reum invented the plastic version while making a hose for watering plants. He worked on it until it was perfect for the toy company.

An American naval engineer named Richard T. James invented the Slinky in 1943. He saw a spring "step" downward after it fell off a shelf. He spent a whole year testing different types of steel wire. He wanted to find the right tension to make the spring walk. His wife, Betty, was not sure at first, but she changed her mind. They started a company called James Industries in Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania. They even made a Slinky Dog in 1952 after a woman sent them drawings.

History shows how much people love this simple toy. On November 27, 1945, they demonstrated it at Gimbels department store in Philadelphia. It was an instant hit with shoppers. They sold the first 400 units in only 90 minutes! The original Slinky cost just $1 to buy. Betty James worked hard to keep the price low for everyone. Over its first 60 years, people bought about 300 million Slinkys. It was even added to the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2000.

The Slinky is useful for much more than just playing games. It is used as a teaching tool in many classrooms. During the Vietnam War, soldiers used them as portable radio antennas. In 1985, astronauts on the Space Shuttle Discovery used them to study weightlessness. They even made a video to show how the toy "droops" in space. You can even use a Slinky to make music. An artist created a musical instrument called a Helixophone using a Slinky and a resonator.
