It can walk down stairs end over end. It can even look like it floats for a moment when you drop it.

Richard James was an engineer who saw a spring step down after a fall. He wanted to make a toy that could walk. He spent a year testing different steel wires. He finally found the right tension to make it move.

His wife, Betty, helped run the company. She wanted the toy to stay cheap so everyone could buy it. In 1945, they showed the toy at a big store. They sold 400 Slinkys in just 90 minutes!

Some Slinkys are made of blue-black steel. Others are made of bright plastic in rainbow colors. People use them for more than just play. They can be tools in a classroom. In the Vietnam War, soldiers used them as radio antennas. Even astronauts used them in space to study how things move without weight. The Slinky is now in the National Toy Hall of Fame.
