Silly Putty

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Silly Putty is a very strange toy.

It acts like many different things. It is a non-Newtonian fluid. This means it changes how it flows based on force. If you hit it fast, it acts like a solid. It might even break. If you drop it, it bounces like a ball.

If you leave it alone, it acts like a liquid. It will slowly flow into a puddle.

People first made it to find a new rubber. This happened during World War II. Scientists wanted a way to make rubber for tires and boots. They found that mixing silicone oil with boric acid worked well. It was not a perfect rubber, but it made a great toy.

Peter Hodgson began selling it in plastic eggs. He named it Silly Putty. It became a huge hit!

It even went into space. Apollo 8 astronauts took it into orbit. Today, it is in the National Toy Hall of Fame. You can find it in many colors. Some even glow in the dark!
