It can be a clear oil or a soft rubber. It can even be a hard plastic.

We use it in many kitchen tools. It can also be used in cars and planes. It helps keep water and air out of small gaps.

Silicone is a polymer. A polymer is a substance made of many small parts joined together. These parts form long chains. These chains have a backbone made of silicon and oxygen. Because these chains can move, silicone is very flexible. Some silicones use crosslinking. This is a way to join the chains together. This makes the material feel like rubber or even hard plastic.

Silicone works well in many ways. It can handle very hot or very cold weather. It also helps stop electricity from flowing. This makes it great for coating wires. It can repel water to make watertight seals. In planes, it helps block noise and shaking. It can even be used to make parts for rockets. Scientists call the study of these materials organosilicon chemistry.
