There are two main ways to make them. One kind sits on curved rails. These rails touch the ground. They let the horse rock back and forth. The second kind hangs from a frame. It uses iron straps to hold the horse. The frame stays still. Only the horse moves.

Long ago, people used tilting seats for practice. These were used in the Middle Ages. Some old books also mention carved horses. Most toys look like they do today. They appeared after the 1600s. In the 1800s, people saw them as toys for kids. Woodworkers made them by hand. Some were simple. Others were fancy for kings. Later, factories began to make them.

One rocking horse is very big. It was made in the year 2000. It is 7 feet 8 inches tall. It weighs 1,200 pounds. This horse is hand-carved from wood. It can hold three adults or five children. One rider was only six weeks old. Another rider was 94 years old!
