A roller coaster is a fun ride on a track.

It carries a train through steep hills and tight turns. Some rides are gentle, while others are very fast. Most coasters are built with steel. This lets the track have loops. An inversion is a part where you go upside down.

Long ago, people rode on hills of ice. These were called Russian Mountains. In the 1800s, people made rides with wheels on tracks.

One early design was a coal train in Pennsylvania. This led to the Switchback Railway in New York.

How do they move? Most trains do not have their own power. A chain pulls the train up a tall hill. This gives the train potential energy. When the train rolls down, it turns into kinetic energy. This is the power of motion.

Some new rides use a launch to start fast. To stay safe, tracks use a block system. This keeps trains from hitting each other. Sensors tell a computer where each train is. This makes the ride safe for everyone.
