Rocking chair

A rocking chair, often called a rocker, is a specialized type of seat designed for movement. It features two curved bands known as rockers attached to the bottom of the legs. These rockers connect the legs on each side to one another.

Because the rockers contact the floor at only two points, the occupant can move back and forth. This motion is achieved by shifting body weight or pushing lightly with the feet. Most rocking chairs are constructed from wood, though other materials are used. This gentle movement is highly valued for its soothing qualities.

The mechanics of a rocking chair rely on the physics of the curved base. As the occupant moves their weight, the chair pivots on the two contact points. This creates a rhythmic, oscillating motion. Some variations use different mechanical systems to achieve this effect. For instance, platform rockers use a spring base or platform for movement.

Other models are known as gliders, which use swinging braces to create motion. This specific type of movement provides a different sensation than traditional rockers.

Many distinct styles of rocking chairs exist, each with unique physical characteristics. The Boston rocker was traditionally crafted from oak and pine. These chairs were often painted black and decorated with fruit or flower designs.

Another style is the ladder back, which features a tall back with horizontal slats. There is also the pressed back style, common in the American colony revival period from 1870 to 1920. This style is identified by raised wood designs on the chair's back. Folding rocking chairs became popular in the 1870s for travel and outdoor use. These are recognized by backs that fold down toward the seat.

History shows that the concept of rocking is very ancient. Rocking cradles exist from antiquity, with examples found in the ruins of Herculaneum. Early rocking chairs appeared in England around 1725. While Benjamin Franklin is sometimes credited with the invention, historians trace the chair's origins to North America in the early 18th century. During the middle of the 18th century, wicker rocking chairs reached a peak of popularity in America. These wicker rockers were celebrated for their creative designs and high levels of craftsmanship.

Industrial innovation significantly changed how these chairs were manufactured. In the 1830s, Peter Cooper designed a unique iron-framed rocking chair.

Unlike Victorian designs, which were often heavily decorated and ostentatious, Cooper's design was minimalist. He used the curve of the metal frame itself to provide the rocking motion. This chair was made of steel or wrought iron with upholstery. His work was displayed at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851 and the Great London Exposition in 1862.

Other craftsmen introduced new materials and methods to the industry. In 1856, German craftsman Michael Thonet received a patent for bentwood manufacturing.

He and his five sons produced bentwood furniture, including rocking chairs, in 1860. These chairs were famous for being lightweight and having a graceful shape. In the 1950s, American craftsman Sam Maloof gained fame for his durable, deluxe rocking chairs. Maloof's specific design was distinguished by rockers shaped like skis.

The significance of the rocking chair extends to human biology and comfort. The gentle motion is often associated with parenting because it soothes infants. Research has shown that gentle rocking can provide a faster onset of sleep than sitting still. This mimics the natural process of a parent rocking a child.

Whether used for relaxation or as part of a sun parlor wicker set, the rocking chair remains a functional piece of furniture. It connects historical artistry with the basic human need for soothing movement.
