A hammock is a suspended sling used for sleeping, resting, or swinging.

It is constructed from fabric, rope, or netting. The structure is stretched between two or more firm anchor points, such as trees or posts. A hammock may consist of one or more cloth panels. It can also be a woven network of twine or thin rope. These devices provide a flexible bed that moves with its environment. Today, they serve as symbols of leisure and relaxation. They are also practical, lightweight beds for camping trips.

The mechanism of a hammock relies on tension and suspension. To create one, a person stretches material between two stable supports. In some traditions, like those in the Yucatán, hammocks are produced on a loom.

Skilled hands weave the threads together to create the body. The quality of the final product depends on the material and thread count. Some versions use tree bark, sisal fibers, or palm fronds. In tropical environments, the design becomes more complex to handle the climate. A "jungle hammock" might include a breathable bottom panel. It may also feature a waterproof rainfly or fine sandfly netting.

To prevent rain from traveling down the support lines, users add drip strings. These are short pieces of string tied to the suspension lines.

Hammocks vary significantly in design and purpose. Traditional naval hammocks are often made of heavy canvas. These wrap around the sleeper like a cocoon to prevent falls. In contrast, many modern leisure hammocks use lightweight nylon. In the Americas, many hammocks are hand-woven using various colorful threads. There are also specialized versions for extreme environments. For example, the Venezuelan design emphasizes breathability to prevent fungal infections in high humidity. This specific style eventually evolved into the jungle hammock used by many military forces.

The history of the hammock involves many different cultures and eras. The word itself comes from the Taíno and Arawak languages. In Taíno, the word meant a "stretch of cloth."

While some 19th-century authors wrongly attributed the invention to the Athenian Alcibiades, the hammock has deeper roots. The 11th-century Hexateuch depicts the biblical Joseph in a cloth hammock.

By the year 1330, the Luttrell Psalter showed hammocks as regular hanging beds.

Spanish colonists later observed the widespread use of these nets among the Taino people.

Naval history is closely tied to the adoption of the hammock. Around 1590, sailing ships began using them to save space. The Royal Navy formally adopted them in 1597.

On a ship, a hammock moves in concert with the vessel's motion. This helps the sailor stay balanced during heavy swells. Before this, sailors often suffered injuries from falling out of fixed bunks. Hammocks also allowed sailors to stow their beds in nets along the gunwale during battle. This maximized the available space on the crowded gun decks.

Hammocks hold great cultural significance in several regions. In El Salvador, they are a central part of daily life.

They are used in homes of all social classes for sitting or napping. The municipality of Concepcion Quezaltepeque even holds a Hammocks Festival every November. In Mexico, the Yucatecan people consider them so important that even humble homes have hooks in the walls. In Venezuela, entire villages historically raised their families in hammocks. These designs provided essential protection against snakes and scorpions in the jungle.

Beyond Earth and sea, hammocks have even reached outer space. During the Apollo program, specifically from Apollo 12 onwards, the Lunar Module used them.

The commander and the lunar module pilot used these hammocks to sleep between moonwalks. This shows how the simple idea of a suspended bed can be useful in any environment. From the tropical jungles of South America to the surface of the moon, the hammock remains a vital tool for rest.
