A tent is a portable shelter made of fabric or other materials.

It is supported by a frame of poles or a system of ropes. Tents serve many vital roles in human life. Nomadic people use them as moving homes. Soldiers use them as temporary barracks. Recreational campers use them for outdoor fun.

They also serve as critical shelters for disaster victims. In some modern cities, tents are used by homeless populations. In these cases, groups of closely pitched tents are often called tent cities.

Setting up a tent is a process known as pitching.

Most standard tents require between 5 and 25 minutes to pitch. Disassembling a tent is called striking, and it takes a similar amount of time. Some specialized tents use spring-loaded poles for rapid setup. These specific models can be pitched in only a few seconds. To keep a large tent stable, users employ guy ropes.

These ropes are tied to stakes or tent pegs driven into the ground. This tension keeps the fabric taut and the structure strong.

Tents come in many distinct shapes and configurations.

Four common types are A-Frame, Pyramid, Hoop, and Dome tents. A-Frame tents use an inverted V-frame design. Pyramid tents come to a single point at the top. Dome tents are very popular with travelers because they are lightweight.

There are also large pole marquees. These are used for weddings, festivals, and industrial covers. Some tents are single-skin, meaning they use only one waterproof fabric layer.

Humans have used tents since at least the early Iron Age.

Tents are even mentioned in the Bible in the book of Genesis. The Roman Army historically used tents made of leather.

Native American tribes and Aboriginal Canadians used cone-shaped tents called tipis. These were used between 10,000 and 4,000 years BC. Other cultures developed unique styles like the yurt. A yurt is a large tent with vertical walls. Traditional designs like the Sámi goahti or lavvu helped people live in many different lands.

The military is one of the largest users of tents globally.

The U.S. Department of Defense follows strict quality specifications. They use tents for barracks, dining facilities, and field headquarters. One popular design is the TEMPER tent. This stands for Tent Expandable Modular PERsonnel. The U.S. Army also uses the DRASH system.

Materials and science determine how well a tent performs.

Cotton canvas is common for emergency shelters because it is breathable. However, cotton becomes very heavy when wet. Nylon and polyester are much lighter and do not absorb much water. These fabrics often use silicone or polyurethane coatings to stay waterproof. The interior of a tent is usually about 10 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the outside.

This warmth is caused by the retention of body heat.

Water resistance is measured by a value called hydrostatic head. This is expressed in millimeters (mm). It measures the pressure needed for water to penetrate the fabric. A rating of 1000 mm is considered shower resistant. A rating of 1500 mm is suitable for summer camping. Tents for year-round use need at least 2000 mm. Expedition tents for extreme conditions are often rated at 3000 mm.

Groundsheets can even be rated for 5000 mm or more. Manufacturers also list capacity, such as "2 person" or "3 berth." These numbers reflect how many people can fit comfortably with gear.
